Chapter Six

Paul’s thighs burned and his calves ached, but he wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Enjoying trotting way too much, he’d completely over done it. Now, Paul was paying for it. Still, he couldn’t be sorry.

However, Paul did feel relief when Jaymes stopped his horse at the edge of a clearing. The big man moved so fluidly with his horse, as if they were one. Then, when Jaymes swung off his horse, so easily, so relaxed, and turned to face him, Paul sort of wanted to smack him.

God, he makes it look so easy.

Biting back a pain-filled grunt, Paul grabbed the saddle horn. He kicked his right foot out of the stirrup and swung his leg over the back of the horse. Two things happened at once. His left foot twisted and he couldn’t get his boot out of the stirrup. At the same time, his right foot landed on the ground, but his leg couldn’t hold him and it buckled.

Paul squealed as he fell, his right leg sliding under the horse as his left hung up in the stirrup. To the animal’s credit, it didn’t do much more than side step once, then turn its head on its long neck and stare down at him. With its ears pricked forward, its expression clearly asked—what are you doing down there?

“Hey, big boy,” Paul whispered. “It’s just me down here. Just chillin.’”

The horse quickly lost interest, lowering its head and nibbling on the grass under hoof.

Sighing, Paul stared up at the sky and decided...this wasn’t so bad. Hell, at least his thighs and calves no longer burned, even if his foot was twisted kind of awkwardly in the stirrup. Besides, the thick grass was soft, the sun was surprisingly warm, and it felt really good just to...be.

Jaymes’ large shadow blocked out the sunlight, drawing Paul’s attention. He squinted up at the man. A warm chuckle reached Paul, then he had to squint when Jaymes moved and the sun flashed into his eyes. Paul felt large hands grip his ankle and boot, and seconds later, his foot was free. Jaymes maintained his grip and lowered it to the ground.

Levering over him, Jaymes smiled down at Paul. “Next time, when you dismount, remember to keep your heels down, just like when you ride,” he softly advised. “Then your foot will slide out of the stirrup instead of getting hung up.”

Paul nodded. “Right. Okay.” He’d remember that, only because all he could think about was how he wished he had the self-confidence to grab the man and lay one on him. “You’re so sexy.”

Jaymes chuckled, his deep green eyes filling with pleasure. “I’m very pleased you feel that way,” he rumbled.

Realizing he’d said that out loud, Paul felt his face flame.

“Oh, too late to take it back now,” Jaymes crooned. He lowered his head and pressed his lips lightly to Paul’s in a soft butterfly kiss. Staring into his eyes, Jaymes urged, “Never feel like you need to censor your thoughts when we are alone.
